On May 30th, 2023, frontline practitioners and managers gathered both in-person at the serene Nano Nagle Place in Cork and online for the fourth annual Heart of Frontline Practice Conference. Themed "Connecting with Compassion in Diverse and Complex Settings," this one-day event was an opportunity for professionals to step back from their daily routines and reflect on the impactful nature of their work.

Hosted by the Heart of Frontline Practice group—comprising SHEP, Dr. Maeve Hurley, Dr. Nicola O’Sullivan, and Fern Higgins Atkinson—the conference was designed to foster a culture of inclusion and enhance communication within professional relationships. Key discussions revolved around curiosity, compassion, and the critical need for reflective practice across various disciplines.

Highlights:

  • Dr. Tom A. Hutchinson delved into “Relating to Patients: Connection, Awareness, Relationships, Engagement,” sharing insights from his extensive experience in whole person care at McGill University.
  • Dr. Naomi Masheti and Fionnula O’ Connell from the Cork Migrant Centre explored “Diversity & Inclusion: Breaking down Barriers Towards Empowering Real Change,” providing actionable strategies for enhancing inclusivity.
  • Marianne Adams discussed “Cultivating Presence,” leveraging her deep expertise as a senior art therapist to enhance interaction with children and youth.

The event, certified for CPD by the Royal College of Physicians Ireland, included interactive plenary sessions and facilitated break-out spaces, ensuring that all attendees had the opportunity to engage deeply with the content and each other.
